Chapter 0422
1 I froze. I never knew Nicholas had started to enjoy playing such games.
There was a trend currently going viral on social media where couples who had just broken up would ask each other if they’ve ever truly loved each other. Claudia’s question was very similar to that question.
In the past, my answer would definitely have been firm and unwavering. But ever since something within our relationship changed, everything changed alongside.
From the day that I got back with him, I had accepted my fate. My companion was just a way for me to repay my debt to him. I would accept however long he wanted me to repay him. Be it a day or forever, I would accept it.
At first, he treated me well and was kind, gentle, and caring. I was touched by his gesture and even made the foolish request that we give each other another chance and start all over again. But at the end of the day, all I got was lies upon lies.
I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly at the thought that I had fallen and been tricked by the same man twice. So, I tried to distance myself from him. However, I failed.
On the other hand, he had given me a great gift when we attended Pete’s wedding. He told me we had never truly gotten a divorce before. From that day on, even the most patient man alive would lose their
temper.
I was prepared to be entangled with him forever, but entanglement didn’t mean that I wanted to “spend my whole life with him“.
He had also ruined all of the preparations I had made. He had refused to meet me, even now when we’ve…
The whole situation felt ironic. The thought of spending my whole life with someone like that was ironic.
So, my eyes turned red as I said firmly, “I’ve never thought that!”
“That’s a shame. Nick had planned to spend his whole life with you, but it’s a shame you don’t love him. I truly feel sorry for Nick!”
Although Claudia had said that she felt sorry for Nicholas, her expression was completely different. She seemed gleeful and pleased with herself.
“What does ‘spending one’s whole life‘ mean to you? Is it for him to spend everyday with you, while he ignores his legal wife? Is that what that phrase means to you?”
I could only assume she was trying to gloat after hearing her words. No matter how good I was in the courtroom, I was still an idiot when it came to love.
Feelings and law were different things. The law had written rules, and I could make a rebuttal on a solid
basis.
But love, on the other hand, had no perfect answer. The people involved weren’t omniscient, and no one could truly tell who was right and who was wrong.
Claudia reminded me kindly, “Ariana, how can you say that? Nick still cares about you. He has his reasons. I can tell you his reasons if you let me.”

“There’s no need for that.” I couldn’t think of a proper reason for him to stay with his step–sister, who was not related to him by blood whatsoever, every day.
“As long as you can understand his reasons, then that’s enough. There’s no need for me to understand.”
Claudia sighed. “You aren’t even giving Nick a chance to explain himself.”
I was rolling my eyes internally. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to give him a chance to explain himself, but it was the fact that the person before me wasn’t even Nicholas himself.
There would be a day when I would move on and forget about him completely.
Claudia pretended to be perplexed as she feigned hesitation and asked, “So, do you have anything you’d like to ask me?”
After failing to come up with anything else, she threw the divorce papers at me and said, “Nick said that he’ll meet you at the court in a month.”
Those words sounded so familiar that I wanted to laugh. The last time I waited to divorce him, I had fallen sick and had lost a lot of weight. Hopefully, things would not end up that way this time around.
That could not happen this time around.
Back then, I had been oblivious to the fact that Nicholas had already heard my firm answer to Claudia’s question.
I also did not know that he had been the one to instruct Claudia to give me the divorce papers through a pair of Bluetooth earphones.
But this time, he had truly agreed to get a divorce.
